The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published an industry-specific quality system requirement in March 2002, whose full name is "Quality Management Systems - Special Requirements for the Organization and Implementation of ISO 9001:2000 for Production Parts and Related Service Parts in the Automotive Industry", also known as IATF16949:2016.

IATF16949: The technical specifications for the 2016 international automotive industry are based on ISO9001 and incorporate the technical specifications of the automotive industry. This specification is fully consistent with ISO9001:2015, but focuses more on defect prevention and reducing quality fluctuations and waste that are prone to occur in the automotive parts supply chain. The specificity and applicability of the ISO/TS16949 standard are very clear, only applicable to automobile manufacturers and their direct spare parts manufacturers. This means that these manufacturers must be directly related to the production of automobiles, able to carry out processing and manufacturing activities, and use these activities to add value to their products. At the same time, there are strict restrictions on the qualifications of certified company manufacturers. Units that only have supporting functions, such as design centers, company headquarters, and distribution centers, or manufacturers of equipment and tools for vehicle manufacturers or automotive spare parts manufacturers, cannot obtain certification. The management of IATF16949:2016 certification is carried out by the five major supervisory bodies representing IATF, which adopt the same procedural methods to supervise the operation and implementation of ISO/TS16949 standards, in order to form a fully unified system of standards and operations worldwide.
